Team launch at Bike Chain Bissoe

We are very pleased to have launched our new elite women’s cycling team, title sponsored by RGB Building Supplies, this weekend at Bike Chain Bissoe in Cornwall.

We had a busy a morning setting up, photoshooting and getting to know some of our fantastic sponsors.

Our kit sponsors (and all around collaborators) Scimitar Sports brought down all our leisure wear and kit bags so the girls had a great time trying everything on!

Team Presentation

After welcoming our VIP guests it was soon time for our formal team presentation which was followed up with a Q+A session with the riders. We got some great questions from the audience!

Scimitar livestreamed our team presentation on Facebook

The evening wrapped up with Rollapaluza roller racing with lots of friendly competition and cheering.

In the women’s finals the spectators made bets on who would win, with the proceeds going towards funding the Bike Chain Ricci youth academy.

Awesome day with these awesome ladies @cycleengageuk @bikechainbissoe @scimitarsportshq @ppauk @trekbikes @ridebontrager 🚴‍♀️❤️

Cycle Engage UK’s elite women’s cycling project Team RGB Building Supplies is very pleased to be racing in the Tour Series.

The national series of city centre events are one of the pinnacles of the British cycling competitive calendar and is an annual spectacle with rounds held in major cities across the country. Drawing huge crowds and televised to a national audience the fast paced and technical racing is an exciting and adrenaline packed experience for spectators and competitors alike.

Team RGB Building Supplies' elite women will be lining up alongside a select group of the nation’s top cycling teams to battle for position in each of the 8 rounds of the Tour Series events. With world class UCI registered teams such as Team WNT Pro Cycling and Drops Cycling Team also taking to the start, our riders will be challenging some of the very best cyclists in the UK.

Team Launch – The Big Reveal

We will be launching our elite women’s cycling team at Bike Chain Bissoe on the 7th April 2017 and we’d like to invite you to come!

As part of our community initiatives to improve and promote participation in cycling, we’ve created an elite women’s cycling team. We’ll be revealing all the team’s sponsors, riders and race calendar at the launch on Friday the 7th of April, and it’s open to everyone to attend.

The event is graciously hosted by one of our sponsors, Bike Chain Ricci at their Bissoe cycle cafe. We’ll have food, drink, local coffee, alcohol, and some great company.

In keeping with our team ethos and desire to get more “bums on seats” the evening is open to the public and families are especially welcome. We’ve got prizes for the roller racing and think it’ll be a great night for all.

Please do come along and find out what we’re about!

Once the riders, staff and sponsors are all introduced there will be an informal Q+A session for guests to get to know more about the rider’s aims, objectives and views on all things #womenscycling.

To get the party started (and running all evening!) there will be Rollapaluza roller racing. With adult and child bikes, everyone can take part in short 30 second races and challenge mums, dads, friends and enemies!

Launch event schedule:

6pm – Official team launch
6.30 pm – Q+A with team
7pm – Rollapaluza and party time!

Meeting the Cornish cycling community

This weekend the team met up in Cornwall to take part in a social ride with Bike Chain Ricci.

Angela (middle) was one of several local women who joined us on our group ride.

Bike Chain Ricci is a Cornish bike shop in Redruth with a bike hire and cafe in Bissoe. Set up by local legend Richard Pascoe, Bike Chain Ricci is renowned for their passion for cycling and Ricci works very hard to grow and promote cycling in the community.

Bike Chain Ricci are the team’s technical and equipment partner, providing bikes and technical support.

Bike Chain Bissoe has become a central meeting point for cyclists in Cornwall: when the team arrived the cafe was already bustling with families and cyclists of all ages.

Cyclists from all over Cornwall meet at Bike Chain Bissoe before their Sunday ride

Bike Chain Ricci run a very successful academy for youth and junior riders and it was great to join lots of keen young cyclists on their training circuit before peeling off for a longer ride through Cornwall.

Following Saturday’s snow we were pleased to find Cornwall bright and sunny.
2008 Olympic silver medallist pentathlete Heather Fell also came along … motivated by the cake on offer!

After we’d filled up on coffee, cake and bacon baps it was time to move on to the main Bike Chain Ricci shop in Redruth. Whilst looking around the Bike Chain Pro store Ricci also shared some great insights into the world of elite cycling.

The team will be using Bontrager accessories to stay safe and seen.

Thank you so much to Ricci and your team for making us feel so welcome and showing us beautiful Cornwall. We loved talking with everyone and sharing our love for cycling. We’re looking forward to our next visit already!

January Social Ride

At least once a month we meet up to train together, catch up on gossip and learn some new routes in each others’ area. This weekend we were led by Exmouth local Jenny Bolsom who took us on a tour of some of her favourite training roads around East Devon.

Although outside of the National Parks of Dartmoor and Exmoor, East Devon is a pretty hilly place and we still managed to do quite a bit of climbing. We even came over Peak Hill (2006 National Hill Climb) but were rewarded with freshly made doughnuts on Sidmouth sea front.

Freshly cooked sugary goodness powers the team (and a few guests!)

October Social Ride

This weekend the team met up in Exeter for the first time to start to get to know each other and get involved in plans for the season ahead.

The day started out at local independent bakery and cafe The Exploding Bakery where we fuelled up on warm beverages and made our first introductions.

We carried on getting to know each other as we followed one of Tom and Alice’s favourite training routes through Devon. This was a chance for everyone to learn a little more about each other and also get used to riding with each other.

Unfortunately the good weather didn’t hold and we were like drowned rats by the time we arrived back in Exeter!

Luckily the nearby pub was warm and cosy and once we were into dry clothes it was time to tuck into a hearty meal and discuss the future of the team.

We’ve announced our full rider line-up over on Neutral Service but we’ll be making proper introductions to each member of the team over the next few months.

Cycle Engage UK press launch

Cycle Engage UK held a press day at Sandy Park on Tuesday 30th August to introduce the concept behind the cycling team and their aims going ahead. With the backing of former paralympian Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson DBE DL the team have got off to a great start.

Held at the Exeter Chief’s ground in Exeter, the launch day enabled husband and wife team Tom and Alice Staniford to speak with local and national press and explain a little more about the project.

Competitive cycling team – women and paracyclists

Cycle Engage UK are setting up a women’s and a paracycling squad that will compete at the top level in domestic cycling races, supporting their riders to help them compete to their best ability and achieve their potential.

“We felt there was a bit of a void, particularly in women’s cycling and paracycling, where these people are underrepresented and underfunded and this team is our way of addressing that.”

– Tom Staniford, speaking to BBC Spotlight

Female athletes, and para athletes even more so, generally face more barriers in achieving their sporting aims but Cycle Engage UK wants to provide that stepping stone for some of the South West’s talented cyclists so that whatever their personal circumstances, they can tackle the challenge of elite competition from a solid base.

The team are looking to partner with some of the top cycling brands to provide the riders with quality equipment alongside corporate funding to relieve financial pressures on the athletes leaving them free to focus on their sporting performance.

Supporting the growth of cycling in everyday lives

Alongside this competitive drive Cycle Engage UK are keen to give back to the community and inspire more people to take up cycling. Whether as a leisure pursuit, method of transport or as a more serious hobby the team would like to encourage more people onto their bikes in the South West.

alice bbc spotlight launch

“We’d like to show people how easy it is to get on your bike and use it day-to-day: you don’t need to be a top athlete with a lifetime of elite sport behind you to be able to enjoy cycling. I’d like to see riding a bike become a commonplace mode of transport and if we can show people how simple, safe and fun cycling can be that would be great”

– Alice Staniford

Press coverage

With film crews from both local ITV and BBC present at the launch, as well as photos with key partners, the project was featured on prime-time TV and has received good social media coverage and responses.

Cycle Engage UK were also on air with Radio Exe speaking about the team’s aims and how they will be working with the community to develop grassroots cycling.
